So you are probably asking yourself, why would I want to go to the La Posada Hotel. There are a few reasons. One is that they have a world famous award winning restaurant called the Turquoise Room in the hotel that you can use as a destination to go to for breakfast or lunch. Grab a window seat and watch the trains go by. The second is that it is a historic location that was pivotal to the Southwest when it was built and even has a couple of museums in it to visit. The history of the place is very fascinating. Be sure to pick up a brochure at the front door to read while you are waiting for your food.
The other reason is that La Posada resides in Winslow, AZ along Route 66 that happens to be the subject of a very famous line in the song by The Eagles, “Take it Easy”. If you remember, in the song the line that says: “Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see, It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me.”
And yes, for those of you that haven’t been there to get your “standing on the corner photo op” you can certainly do that when you are there. It is just a short 2 block walk from the La Posada down Route 66 where they have a light post with a sign that says, Standing on the Corner, located in front of a brick wall painted to look like a building
From the Phoenix area this would make a great Day Ride. Simply take Hwy. 87 and travel North East to Winslow. It is a beautiful ride through beautiful pines of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest while winding you through the cities of Payson, Pine, Strawberry and on up to Winslow, with views of the Mogollan rim to elevations over 7,000 feet along the way. Starting from the Loop 101 and Shea Blvd. The distance is 162 miles. Google maps calls that a 2 hour and 47 min ride.
