Greetings from the American Legion Family of Post 138! Where did this year go? Have you ever heard of the Fisher House Foundation?
The VA Medical Center in Tucson is the home of the newest Fisher House. This was the brainchild of a loving couple that understood how
important having family close when military or Veteran is receiving treatment at a VA hospital. Families can stay for no cost at all. The Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and bath shared kitchen, dining, living & laundry areas. I had the privilege to stay at the Fisher House in Palo Alto California a few years ago. It is a truly an amazing place! The staff is very warm and caring. I met some incredible people with even more incredible stories. Some had been there for quite some time others like me only a week or so. Since inception, this program has saved military and Veterans’ families an estimated $282 million in out of pocket costs.
The Fisher House Foundation also operates the Heroes Miles program and the Hotels for Heroes program which allows people to donate their flyer miles and/or hotel points to bring families to the bedside of an injured service member. The foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.
Numbers from their website since this program started:
Families served: More than 250,000! More than 25,000 in 2014 alone
Daily capacity: 848 families
Number of lodging days offered: Over 5.5 million, 7,000 students have received $11,000,000 in scholarship awards, Over 50,000 airline tickets provided by Hero Miles to service members and their families, worth nearly $73 million.
